Richard Gutierrez versus Teddy Reid photos by Rich Esposito

Both men started fast, exchanging heavy shots when Gutierrez (in Red trunks) connected with a hard right hand to Reid's temple with less than a minute gone in round one. Visibly hurt, Reid (in White trunks) tried to slug his way out of danger but was nailed repeatedly by snapping jabs and mean, hard punches to his sides and belly from Gutierrez. Round two saw Reid fight his way off the hook but it seemed only a matter of time before the aggressive Gutierrez was able to get Reid in trouble again. With about a half a minute to go in round three Gutierrez bombed away at Reid with both hands but was unable to put the durable veteran on the mat.

With his back to the ropes and Reid pressuring him, Gutierrez landed a right hand on the hip that sent Reid staggering back and down. Complaining the punch was low, Reid was slow to rise, despite Referee Eddie Claudio's ruling that the punch was a legal blow. Reid was counted out, all the while hoping the punch would be ruled low so that he could be given time to recuperate from the foul. A replay on the Mohegan Sun's big screen showed the punch was just under the belt-line and more to the hip than to the groin. Either way it was likely Reid wasn't going to last much longer under Gutierrez's unrelenting attack.
Also
in
attendance at the Mohegan Sun event were Rhode Island's own Vinny Paz and
Panamanian Legend Roberto Duran. Duran, who will be inducted into the
International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York this June, signed
gloves, ticket stubs and posed for photos with many fans in attendance.
